The Service Committees of Oregon Area 58 (listed below) exist to carry the message of recovery to the still-suffering alcoholic. An orientation for Area Officers and Committee members is held each January to share our experience in service with new Committee members.

Access
To carry the message of AA with access/special needs, and to communicate that information to groups, districts and service committees through workshops, presentations, mailings, etc.
Service Positions: This position is a two- year commitment, rotating in even numbered years. The purpose is to gather information and shared experience from G.S.O., other areas, districts and AA groups on ways to carry the message of AA to the still suffering alcoholic, or current members, with access/special needs and to communicate that information to the groups, districts and service committees through workshops, presentations, mailings/email, etc. There may be some travel between assemblies.
Archives:
Collects and preserves correspondence, records, photographs and media articles for the guidance and research of A.A members and others.
Service Positions: The term of the Archivist and Archives Assistant is 8 years each. The rotation occurs in 8 year intervals beginning in 2004. The purpose is more than mere custodial activities; it is the means by which we collect, preserve and share the rich and meaningful heritage of our fellowship. The archives committee is to receive, classify and index all relevant materials, including, but not limited to, administrative files, records, correspondence, literary works and artifacts considered to have importance to AA. This is done through workshops, presentations, mailings/email, etc. Some travel may be involved between assemblies. Meets with the archives committee for work at the archive repository.
Cooperation with Treatment Facilities (CTF)
To help carry the A.A. message into treatment facilities.
Service Positions: The position is a two-year commitment. This is a twelfth step committee using the TF workbook from GSO. The purpose is to serve as a resource for district TF committees in coordinating the work of individual AA members and groups who carry the message to alcoholics in treatment facilities and setting up means of Bridging the Gap from treatment to AA. The committees also work to clarify what AA can and cannot do, within the traditions, to help alcoholics in treatment. There is travel to districts to put on workshops and give presentations on doing TF work. A literature and travel budget is provided.
Corrections Facilities Committee
To facilitate inside A.A. Meetings and Groups by providing assistance and information to A.A. members and A.A. Groups desiring to participate in this work.
Service Positions: Corrections Chair and Alternate Chair serve a continuous term of two years each with the Alternate then becoming the Chair at the end of his/her term. The purpose is to facilitate AA meetings inside the state and federal correctional facilities. This is done by organizing outside AA members to attend inside meetings on a regular basis. Volunteers are identified through workshops and roundtables presented by the CF committee and through literature disseminated at districts and groups publicizing the available service opportunities. The CF committee works closely with designated correctional-facility officials to assist outside volunteers in obtaining clearance to enter various facilities, to ensure that inside meetings are occurring at the desired intervals, and to assist in starting new meetings when requested. A literature and travel budget is provided.
Finance, Treasurer
To study all requests for expenditure of funds, convey recommendations to the Area, prepare overall budget for the Area, and conduct yearly audits.
Service Positions: This position is a three- year commitment. Duties are performed in the finance room during the assemblies. Responsibilities are: a) Study all requests for expenditure of funds, b) Convey their recommendations prior to the vote of the assembly on expenditures, c) Oversee expense accounts of area officers and service committees, d) Prepare overall budget for the area, e) Conduct yearly audit of the area treasurer’s books, f) Ensure orderly turnover of the retiring area treasurer’s books and bank balance by receiving these items from the outgoing treasurer, conducting final audit and in turn delivering the books to the newly elected treasurer.
Grapevine/La Vina
Our meeting in print. To encourage districts and groups to have Grapevine/La Viña representatives, and act as advocates for the Grapevine/La Viña as a recovery tool.
Service Positions: This position is a two-year commitment. The immediate past delegate serves in this position. The purpose is to: a) Ensure that districts and groups have Grapevine Representatives, or GVRs, acting as advocates for the Grapevine at the district or group level, alerting the group’s to the use of the magazine as a recovery tool, b) Set up the Grapevine display at area assemblies, c) Attend special functions, when asked, with the Grapevine display and/or make presentations on the Grapevine, d) To promote the Grapevine, e) Be familiar with the Grapevine web site and other Grapevine literature. Some travel can be involved between assemblies.
Hospitals
To facilitate AA meetings within the State Hospital system Portland and Salem by organizing AA members from outside the hospitals to attend meetings inside the hospitals on a regular basis.
Service Positions: This position is a three-year commitment. The purpose of the Oregon Area Hospitals committee is to facilitate AA meetings within the state hospital system, in Portland and Salem, by organizing AA members from outside the hospitals to attend meetings inside the hospitals on a regular basis. This is done through workshops at districts where we inform GSRs of the opportunities available for service. We also provide information during committee sessions and roundtables. Committee person should have transportation available at all times and be able to commit several hours at least one day a week. A literature and travel budget is provided.
Newsletter Committee
The Newsletter presents news and opinions from Oregon Area 58 to members and other interested parties.
Service Positions: This position is a two-year commitment, rotating in odd numbered years. The purpose is to publish the Oregon Area newsletter. The newsletter is a four- page publication, which focuses on news of service work and upcoming service events. The newsletter is made available each month for free on the Oregon Area Web Site only. DCMs and GSRs are encouraged to download and print the newsletter to make it available to AA members, groups and intergroups.
Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC)
To serve as a resource by providing information about AA to those who have contact with alcoholics through their profession. This group includes, among others, doctors, lawyers, clergy, judges and social workers.
Service Positions: The position is a two-year commitment. This is a twelfth step committee using the CPC workbook from GSO. The purpose is to serve as a resource for district CPC committees in providing information about AA to those who have contact with alcoholics through their profession. Information about where we are, what we are, what we can do and what we cannot do. This group includes, among others, doctors, clergy, judges and social workers. There is travel to districts to put on workshops and give presentations on doing CPC work. A literature and travel budget is provided.
Public Information (PI)
To serve as a resource for District P.I. Committees by providing information from GSO and other Areas through
workshops, presentations and mailings.
Service Positions: The position is a two-year commitment. This is a twelfth step committee using the PI workbook from GSO. The purpose is to serve as a resource for district PI committees in carrying the AA message to still suffering alcoholics by informing the general public, media, schools, industry, etc. about what the program has to offer. This is done through public service announcements, visits to schools, and other organizations. There is travel to districts to put on workshops and give presentations on doing PI work. A literature and travel budget is provided.
Translation / Interpretation Committee
Coordinates and facilitates translation of documents to non-English speaking AA members.
Service Positions: The Translation / Interpretation Committee will provide communication for the Spanish-speaking AA community for Oregon Area service related needs. The Committee will consist of a Chairperson and a Co-Chairperson, who will be appointed by the Oregon Area Chairperson. The Chairperson will coordinate and facilitate all Oregon Area Spanish interpretation and translation needs and requests. The Co-Chairperson will assist with translation and interpretation needs at Oregon Area assemblies and help to maintain a pool of translators and interpreters for Area 58 needs. Length of service would be one year for the Chairperson and one year for the Co-Chairperson with the Co-Chairperson rotating into the Chairperson position.
Website -- Not a standing Committee
To manage and maintain the Oregon Area Web Site as a resource in helping the Area carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to
the still-suffering alcoholic.
Service Positions: The Webmaster and Assistant Webmaster serve a continuous term of two years each with the Assistant then becoming Webmaster at the end of his/her term. Rotation occurs in even numbered years. The web site committee consists of the webmaster, assistant webmaster, and members appointed by the Oregon Area Chair. The committee will report to the Area Chair and will operate under the Oregon Area Web Site Guidelines (see Oregon Area Guidelines) The purpose of the web site is to: a) Assist the groups of the area carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the still suffering alcoholic, b) Facilitate communication among GSRs, DCMs, area committee members and area officers,
c) Improve in understanding the workings of the area in order to encourage participation in service work. Between assemblies the webmaster position takes 1-3 hours per week, updating pages, answering email, committee discussion, etc. Then perhaps two or three times a year a “project” (nature varies) will take 10-40 hours. Similar duties apply to the assistant webmaster.
